Located along 17-Mile Drive…
Located on 17-mile scenic coastal drive north of Cypress Golf Course and Crocker Grove and south of Point Joe and Asilomar Beach, is Seal Rock Beach. Owned and operated by Pebble Beach Corporation, the 17-Mile Drive is a 17-mile scenic loop hugging the coastline and accessible through four entrances: main entrance at CA State Route 1, Carmel Gate and Pacific Grove Gate.
Seal Rock Creek Beach is a small sandy beach at the mouth of Seal Rock Creek where you can picnic and enjoy the marine life playing in the surf. Seal Rock can be seen from the beach and the parking lot (which is always populated with tourist buses). At the parking lot, you can use a paid telescope to see the rock covered with barking seal lions and harbor seals. Their voices carry as far as Spyglass Golf Course!
Just north of Seal Rock, is Bird Rock which is also covered with sea lions as well as seagulls, Herons, Pelicans, Sandpipers and more coastal birds. Sometimes during the months of May, June, July, the sea fog can be so thick all day you cannot see the rocks at all.
Be aware of the turbulent sea…
The tide can get rough with the turbulent sea especially during winter months reaching 25 foot high waves. Don’t ever climb on the rocks during these times but stay within the parking lot and hiking path. Even with signs posted “DANGER, Do not climb on rocks”, Tourists have crawled under the rope barriers, trying to take selfies or group photos. Caught by surprise, they are swept out to sea by powerful waves and undercurrents – their bodies found weeks later.
Hiking Trail along the coast…
From Seal Rock/Bird Rock parking lot, a hiking trail extends north along the coastline for a couple of miles. Pets walkers, joggers, and walkers can be found here at all hours of the day. Make sure to always have your camera, because the views are magical and gorgeous, especially spectacular sunsets no matter what time of year. Because of the soft sand on the trail, bike riders keep to 17-mile drive bike lane.
